Bill Parsons joined Lockheed Martin
Information Systems & Global Services – Civil
Organization in October 2008 as Vice President, Strategic Space
Initiatives in Titusville, Florida. He is responsible for
helping to formulate IS&GS strategy as it relates to Civil and
Defense Space Programs and assists other business units as
requested.
Prior to joining Lockheed Martin, Bill served as the Director of
NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida and served
in other key positions including the Deputy Director of KSC, the
Director of NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center in Mississippi,
the Shuttle Program Manager for Return to Flight after the
Columbia tragedy and the Deputy Director of the Lyndon B.
Johnson Space Center.
In 1990, Parsons’ joined the NASA team at the Kennedy Space
Center in the Shuttle Operations Directorate. He held numerous
positions within the Shuttle Operations Directorate including
Launch Site Support Manager, Shuttle Payload Flow Manager and
Shuttle Flow Director. He helped create the Space Station
Hardware Integration Office in 1994 and deployed to Alabama and
California to help bring the first United States hardware
contribution to the International Space Station to the Kennedy
Space Center for launch. In 1997, he was assigned to the
Stennis Space Center as the Chief of Operations of the
Propulsion Test Directorate. In 1998 Parsons’ relocated to
NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston to become the Director of
the Center Operations and Support Directorate. He was appointed
Director of the Stennis Space Center in 2002.
In 2003, he was appointed the Space Shuttle Program Manager to
lead the Return to Flight activities for the Agency and played a
key role in the success of the Discovery STS-114 mission. Soon
after that mission he returned to the Stennis Space Center to
lead hurricane Katrina recovery efforts at Stennis and the
Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans. He was soon assigned
as the Director of the Stennis Space Center for the second
time.
Parsons’ has received numerous honors including the Presidential
Rank Award (Meritorious Executive); NASA’s Exceptional Service
Medal and Distinguished Service Medal; the National Intelligence
Medal of Achievement; the Silver Snoopy, awarded by astronauts
for outstanding performance in flight safety and mission
success. He also received the Distinguished Alumni Award
(Alumni Hall of Fame) and the Engineering Alumni of the year
award from the University of Mississippi and the Alumni of the
year award from the University of Central Florida.
He holds a Bachelor’s of Engineering degree from the University
of Mississippi and a Master’s of Engineering Management from the
University of Central Florida.
Parsons’ resides on Merritt Island, Florida with his wife and
two children. |
